I found a began to practice Yoga Nidra when I became disabled for four years, and basically lived in my bed. Anyone can do Yoga Nidra, as it asks very little of you.

Only to lie down in whatever position is comfortable and to listen.

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra prepares your body for sleep by producing and releasing hormones. It does so by releasing the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by your pineal gland. Your pineal gland is a small gland in your brain. Melatonin is very important because it’s such your body circadian rhythm which is your 24 hour sleep/week schedule, which determines you fall  asleep when you wake up.

Secondly, research has shown, that meditation increases the amount of  DHEA in your body, and those with higher levels of DHEA may sleep more soundly at night. This hormone is made by your adrenal glands, and it increases your REM sleep.

The deep healing sleep we all need so much.

Why do we need more REM sleep?

Usually, REM sleep happens 90 minutes after you fall asleep. The first period of REM typically lasts 10 minutes. Each of your later REM stages gets longer, and the final one may last up to an hour. Your heart rate and breathing quickens. You can have intense dreams during REM sleep, since your brain is more active. REM is important because it stimulates the areas of the brain that help with learning and  is associated with increased production of proteins

Babies can spend up to 50% of their sleep in the REM stage, compared to only about 20% for adults.

DHEA hormone also neutralize cortisol, aka the stress hormone which makes you not be able to sleep, lose weight, keeps you feeling constantly stressed, and contributed a lot of other health issues. Higher levels of cortisol keep you up through the night, especially if you’re waking up around 2 to 3 AM.

Yoga Nidra is a healing practice for everyone.

The practice of Yoga Nidra is for all ages.
